Seeking Urgently Needed Effective Solutions: Responding to the Call of Pope Francis to the United Nations

The Permanent Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations cordially invites friends and supporters of the Global Security Institute to a special event titled, “Seeking Urgently Needed Effective Solutions.”

The event will be held Wednesday, October 7, from 1:15- 2:45 pm, in Conference Room 11 of the United Nations headquarters.

When he spoke at the United Nations September 25, Pope Francis reminded us that the multi-faceted work of the UN, in striving to serve the common good, has lifted up humanity. The Pope identified core issues that require “urgently needed effective solutions.” These include the protecting the climate, UN reform, elimination of nuclear weapons, abiding by the rule of law, just governance, achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, human dignity, and personal and social values in action.

The event will address both a broad range of issues germane to the UN’s mission and today’s most pressing global challenges with a particular emphasis on what Pope Francis said with regard to peace, security, sustainable development, and elimination of nuclear weapons. In order to achieve practical and prudent solutions to these pressing issues in the manner for which Pope Francis is calling, great cooperation and solidarity are needed.

The panelists will be:
* Archbishop Bernardito Auza, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the UN (moderator)
* Senator Douglas Roche, Former Canadian Ambassador for Disarmament to the UN and author of the new book, The United Nations in the Twentieth Century: Grappling with the world’s most challenging issues: militarism, the environment, human rights, inequality
* His Excellency Kim Won-soo, Under Secretary-General and Acting High Representative for Disarmament Affairs.
* Mr. Jonathan Granoff, President, Global Security Institute.

UN Passes are required to attend the event. To RSVP, please email event@holyseemission.org or call 212.370.7885 to reserve your pass.

Seating is limited.
