The United Nations Can Help us Get Through These Dark Days

Russia’s war on Ukraine must be strongly condemned, but that war, heinous as it is, does not invalidate the right to peace. If anything, it reinforces the overriding imperative of building a world structure that supports the right to peace. Such a structure already exists: the United Nations.

Can Biden and Putin Ease Nuclear Dangers Like Reagan and Gorbachev?

At the recent Geneva Summit, President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a joint declaration containing strong echoes of Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. Can Biden and Putin make the world safer than it was in 1985? Time will tell, but history gives us hints.

Senator Ed Markey introduces ‘Invest in Cures Before Missiles’ (ICBM) Act

On March 26, US Representative Ro Khanna and PNND Co-President Senator Ed Markey introduced into the US Congress the Investing in Cures Before Missiles (ICBM) Act. Dr. Frank von Hippel and Princeton's Program on Science and Global Security

Dr. Frank von Hippel, a member of GSI’s Board of Advisors, is co-Director of Princeton’s Program on Science and Global Security. In the 1980s, as chairman of the Federation of American Scientists, he partnered with Evgenyi Velikhov in advising Mikhail Gorbachev on the technical basis for steps to end the nuclear arms race. In 1994-5, he served as Assistant Director for National Security in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. And much more

Von Hippel was recently profiled in a brilliant article in the Princeton Alumni Weekly Magazine.

James E. Goodby and David A. Koplow in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists

An exceedingly challenging agenda of urgent, important, and diverse arms control issues awaits the Biden administration. The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) will surely be a top priority, as well as picking up the pieces left from the Trump administration’s wreckage of the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty, the Treaty on Open Skies, and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran. Ambassador James Goodby, member of GSI’s Non-Partisan Security Group, and David A. Koplow , both members of GSI’s Non-Partisan Security Group, reflect in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists on possible structures and routes to tackle the vital issues before them. A “do not miss” article.
