The United Nations and a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World:
New approaches and initiatives

Tuesday Oct 28, 2014
13:15 – 14:30
United Nations, New York, Conference Room A

Sponsored by UNFOLD ZERO and the Permanent Mission of Indonesia to the United Nations
Co-sponsored by the Permanent Missions of Costa Rica, Finland and Kazakhstan, and by the NGO Committee on Disarmament, Peace and Security.

Background. The United Nations, from its very first General Assembly resolution, has put nuclear disarmament as one of its most important goals. However, progress has been slow due to the lack of political will in key countries, and the continued reliance on nuclear deterrence. This panel will discuss recent initiatives which indicate a greater potential to elevate political will, enhance cooperative security approaches, phase out nuclear deterrence and facilitate nuclear disarmament negotiations through UN-focused approaches.
