At the reception hosted by the Middle Powers Initiative on May 5, 2010, PNND Members presented Ambassador Cabactulan with parliamentary declarations supporting a Nuclear Weapons Convention. Additionally, MPI Chairman Emeritus Douglas Roche presented Ambassador Cabactulan with a declaration in support of an NWC signed by over 500 Order of Canada recipients.

Nuclear Weapon-Free Zones Civil Society Forum

PNND organized a one-day Nuclear Weapon-Free Zones Civil Society Forum to explore the lessons from the existing NWFZs, the possibility of establishing additional NWFZs, and the role that NWFZs can play in achieving a nuclear weapon-free world. The event was co-sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Chile to the United Nations, the International Association of Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms, and Mayors for Peace.

NPT Strategy and Briefing Session

A strategy and briefing session on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty brought together more than 75 representatives from the UN community, including ambassadors, their staff, NGOs and UN Secretariat staff. Speakers discussed the view of the NPT from Washington, DC, and the implications for the Review Conference.

MPI Chairman Henrik Salander and MPI Chairman Emeritus Douglas Roche traveled to Seoul, South Korea, to participate in the Summit of Honor on Atoms for Peace and the Environment. Also on the agenda were meetings with the foreign ministry and parliament.

Model United Nations

GSI President Jonathan Granoff delivered a keynote address at a special Montessori Model United Nations, held in Brooklyn, New York.

“Nuclear Weapons and International Law: A Nuclear Non-proliferation Regime for the 21st Century”

A one-day conference hosted by the Fordham International Law Journal and the Non-proliferation, Arms Control & Disarmament Interest Group of the American Society for International Law. Speakers included Jonathan Granoff of GSI, John Burroughs of LCNP, Deepti Choubey of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, former US Ambassador to the IAEA Gregory Schulte, High Representative Duarte and other noted experts.
